Lesotho is a landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa. The landscape is mountainous to alpine, and the climate is therefore cooler than in other areas of the same latitude. Here occurs a mountain-dwelling birdlife, however no endemic species, but only two endemic subspecies, a Yellow Canary and a Layard's Tit-babbler. The country also shares two EBAs (Endemic Bird Areas) with South Africa, according to BirdLife International, the 'Lesotho highlands' and the 'Southern African grasslands' both with a number of restricted range species. Lesotho has two relatively small national parks, the Sehlabathebe National Park and the Ts'ehlanyane National Park. There are six IBAs (Important Bird Areas) spread across the country. One of these is of particular interest: the Mafika-Lisiu pass with Katse dam, as this area is well developed by a tarred road. Anyway, Lesotho is an underrated destination for birdwatchers. This multilingual (en, de, fr, es, ja, cn) bird guide introduces the entire birdlife of Lesotho in colored pictures. As a bonus, links to HD videos of 140 bird species and to audios of more than 45 species are included. Where available, links to the valuable websites of UNESCO, BirdLife International and the Ramsar Organization are provided, which characterize the country and help to find the best sites for birdwatching.
